Toyota OBD I Diagnostic Trouble Codes
This covers Toyota Motor Corporation OBD I diagnostic and explains how to get the codes without any special tools. The codes are listed seperately for Camry and Corolla models as needed. The codes are defined as to what system is affected. When possible we give the more commonly known OBD II component name.
This information combined with proper testing procedures, specifications, and tools like a digital multimeter can help you fix the vehicle right the first time. OBD diagnostic does not have to be difficult or inconclusive.

Using The MIL Light To Get Codes
Before retrieving trouble code(s), verify MIL on instrument panel light comes on with ignition on and engine off. The MIL light should go off when engine is started.
Turn ignition on with engine off. Install Jumper Wire between terminals TE1 and E1
in Data Link Connector (DLC). See image
Count number of flashes from MIL on instrument panel. If system is operating properly (with no trouble
codes), MIL will flash continuously and evenly.
If trouble code exists, digits of trouble code will be flashed at approximately 1/2-second intervals. A 1 1/2-second pause separates first and second digits of code.
If more than one trouble code is stored, a 2 1/2-second pause will occur before next trouble code is flashed. Once all trouble codes are displayed, a 4 1/2-second pause will occur then trouble code(s) will be repeated.
Trouble codes are displayed in order of smallest to largest. After trouble codes are retrieved, remove jumper wire to exit Normal Mode.
